Turbinicarpus horripilus Synonyms- Pediocactus horripilus, Mammillaria horripila, Gymnocactus horripilus, Thelocactus horripilus, Thelocactus goldii, Neolloydia horripila. Description- Body- Often clustered, globular to elongate, 70-180mm high, 40-65mm wide olive green. Root- Swollen bundled. Tubercles- Conical 5-7mm high. Spines- Radials- 12-14 rigid white with brown tip 9-11mm long. Centrals- 1-2 rigid white-grey with black tip 12-18mm long. Flowers- Magenta with whitish throat 22-31mm long, 22-35mm wide. Fruits- Greenish-red becoming yellowish-brown 4-6mm long, 3-5mm wide. Distribution- Metztitlan in the state of Hidalgo (Mexico). Notes- Easy species to cultivate and fast growing. Requires strong sun to develop good spinal growth. Will start clumping at a young age. |
